چکیده

deficit- irrigation is one of the measures for water saving and optimum application of water in surface irrigation. however, lack of enough evidences, doubts on the proper application of deficit- irrigation, dissemination of research results and its application by the farmers are of practical challenging issues. this paper summarizes and analyzes some research results on deficit- irrigation in iran. it also brings up the results of a working workshop on the issues and challenges involved in deficit-irrigation for surface irrigation. as an achievement, the paper provides the concept of differentiation between deficit-irrigation techniques, which is actually an optimization technique, and the common ways of using less water. moreover, these research projects had been conducted in small plots, having high irrigation efficiency (100%), and might not be adopted under field conditions with commonly low water application efficiencies. based on the results' analyses, there are gaps on the number of comprehensive deficit-irrigation projects. it was concluded that currently the common farmers showed not much knowledge or experiences on deficit-irrigation. most of the conducted projects were technically oriented and did not consider socio-economic aspects of the farmers. based on analysis of the results of different research studies and also considering low farm irrigation efficiencies, it was recommended that deficit irrigation about 20 to 25 percent, except at the sensitive stages of crop growth, could be practiced for the common crops. as a future perspective, the paper concludes that most of the conducted research projects have been carried out on small plots, focusing on crop responses to water stress (sometimes with crop water-yield functions results), and optimization issues have not been addressed well. however, even with present knowledge on deficit-irrigation and water-yield optimization, there are doubts on use of these results for the small-land holder farmers and more comprehensive research activities should be carried out in this regard.

Effect of deficit irrigation on crop growth, yield and quality of onion in subsurface drip irrigation

Indiahas the largest area under onion (Allium cepa) crop but its average productivity (14.21 t ha-1) is considerably lower than the world’s average of 19.4 t ha-1. Besides low productivity, irrigation efficiencies are also very low i.e. 30-35% in India. Managing onion crop with less than adequate irrigation water availability is a challenge in several parts of the country. Options of i) deficit...

Deficit irrigation for reducing agricultural water use.

At present and more so in the future, irrigated agriculture will take place under water scarcity. Insufficient water supply for irrigation will be the norm rather than the exception, and irrigation management will shift from emphasizing production per unit area towards maximizing the production per unit of water consumed, the water productivity. To cope with scarce supplies, deficit irrigation,...

Economics of Surface Irrigation Systems

Irrigated agriculture in Idaho faces a decline in the availability of water and increasing costs for that available water. The demand for recreational and environmental urban water use continues to grow. Adopting improved irrigation technology is one of the few remaining alternatives that agriculture can use to address this problem. Development of large-scale water projects to enhance water sup...

Growth and yield response of potato genotypes to deficit irrigation

In Ardabil region potato crop needs several irrigation, however ground water supplies arebeing exhausted due to reduced precipitation and intensive irrigation. In this research droughttolerance of 10 commercial potato cultivars was studied at three irrigation treatments (100%,80% and 60% of required irrigation water) in Ardabil in a two years field study, 2013-2014.At harvest, marketable tuber ...

Grapevine under deficit irrigation: hints from physiological and molecular data.

BACKGROUND A large proportion of vineyards are located in regions with seasonal drought (e.g. Mediterranean-type climates) where soil and atmospheric water deficits, together with high temperatures, exert large constraints on yield and quality. The increasing demand for vineyard irrigation requires an improvement in the efficiency of water use. Deficit irrigation has emerged as a potential stra...

Improving Almond Productivity under Deficit Irrigation in Semiarid Zones

Sustainable water use is one of the greatest challenges of irrigated agricultural systems. This study presents the results related to the agronomic and physiological response to the deficit irrigation of almond trees (Prunus dulcis DA Webb Mill cv. Guara) under semiarid Mediterranean conditions in the Guadalquivir river basin (SW Spain). Two deficitirrigation strategies were tested: i) regulate...
